I’ve lost count of the number of domestic violence cases I’ve successfully prosecuted which only came to the police attention because of the actions of concerned neighbours. These people are literal life-savers. For MPs to discourage this for political point scoring is shameful.pic.twitter.com/SnZh9gvADu

He isn’t discouraging that, though, is he? He’s questioning the motive of the neighbours given that it clearly wasn’t entirely about concern for the woman’s safety because they also called the Guardian.

The motive would appear to be quite clear; 1. Call the police because it’s a potential domestic violence case 2. Contact the press because, as an MP, this is very much in the public interest. It’s amazing how people move the goalposts on point 2 when it doesn’t suit them.

Given the initial police denial of any incident and who BoJo is, one would have to ensure there was evidence (of course after trying to see if she was ok & ringing police) let's face a statement would be buried deep, spun away never to be heard of again.

I should have called the police on my father for assaulting my mother many times. Had I done so I indeed wouldn't have called the local paper afterwards, but then my father wasn't also an MP potentially about to become the PM. At this point, it becomes worth reporting.

This. It's not hard to understand that running to become PM means your public & private conduct comes under scrutiny & if everyone has the right to a private life, fine, just behave in a way that doesn't negatively affect others, like being drunk & disorderly in the early hours

Cant it be both? A call to the police for the lady's safety, message passed to a newspaper to alert the public as to the sort of person who is seeking to be the leader of this country. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I would argue that the "big element" to the story was the fact that The Met initially seemed to be attempting some kind of a cover up by denying their attendance. Given the genuine public interest element in this story due to Johnson trying to become PM, that needs addressing

I had initially thought this, but think that the police were not seeking to publicise a domestic disturbance that they had already assessed as non criminal. Unless otherwise shown, I am not yet subscribing to the view that there was some sort of cover up.

I get you but, there is a difference between the police choosing not to actively put the story out to the press and them actually denying it when initially asked.

I know what you are saying, and there may be more to it than just trying to prevent the "politicization" of a domestic issue, but , right now, I am not subscribing to anything more suspicious.

I have no idea whether the neighbours (or anyone else) has been paid for this. If they have that is, for me, a whole other issue and does nothing to diminish the fact that a story like this, about a man almost certain to become PM in weeks, is in the public interest.

It is true that there is a certain amount of public interest in this incident but I am a bit suspicious that the neighbour chose to contact a paper so soon without there being some sort of investigation to establish the facts and then The Guardian, hardly a Tory supporting paper.
