Labour MP ⁦@stellacreasy⁩ is pregnant and says she is “forced to choose between being an MP and a mum”. Her story is heartbreaking, but... 1/https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jun/17/pregnant-mp-maternity-leave-equality-stella-creasy …

/2 Stella thinks women MPs who have babies are being badly treated when they are no differently to any other mothers who are self-employed, as MPs are. Indeed they are treated BETTER because they keep their full £77k pay even if they take 6 months off work to care for their baby

/3 Most self-employed new mothers aren’t entitled to anything more than the statutory maternity pay pittance. They also face losing their work if they take months off, which MPs don’t.

/4 Stella could pay someone else to do much of her job for her while she is on maternity leave. The only real issue is voting in Parliament, where clearly the rules need to be changed to allow proxy voting.

/5 I’m also not sure what Alabama abortion rights and LGBT protests outside schools have to do with MPs’ maternity leave but hey ho. Parliament needs to join the 21st century but let’s not pretend MPs who want to care for their babies are victims. They’re not.

What a sorry state of affairs when a leader is of the thinking that they should have better conditions than those they’re leading. Surely it’s the other way around?

I remember working with a fiery Irish lady who said HUH! I was working up until two weeks before my 6th Baby!! My Wife was still working at 72 because she wanted to and sadly died this april from heart Failure, I could have stopped her but that would have stopped her being her!

Try being a teacher and a mother! Or a nurse! Let alone self employed! Sorry but if she's on an a near £80k salary she has to deal with it like every other mother on this planet. If MP rules need changing for voting, that's different.

Yeah I'm sure there are many similar stories. I was a single mother to 2 boys 3 and 4 working 40+ hours a week for e.g. Decent job but not £80k! That aside I have to be honest and say I just can't stand the woman. I'm just fed of everything being such a big deal & victimhood

That's a funny sort of "heartbreaking". Hate Fact: you cannot do any two full time jobs (for example, MP, mother) at once. Reality doesn't care about social justice.

In a lot of cases, women are giving their kids to strangers and missing out on the best years of their lives so they can afford foreign holidays and a load of material crap like ipads, huge tvs and pre-prepared meals/eating out. It's not the way to live.
