Labour MP ⁦@stellacreasy⁩ is pregnant and says she is “forced to choose between being an MP and a mum”. Her story is heartbreaking, but... 1/https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jun/17/pregnant-mp-maternity-leave-equality-stella-creasy …

/2 Stella thinks women MPs who have babies are being badly treated when they are no differently to any other mothers who are self-employed, as MPs are. Indeed they are treated BETTER because they keep their full £77k pay even if they take 6 months off work to care for their baby

/3 Most self-employed new mothers aren’t entitled to anything more than the statutory maternity pay pittance. They also face losing their work if they take months off, which MPs don’t.

/4 Stella could pay someone else to do much of her job for her while she is on maternity leave. The only real issue is voting in Parliament, where clearly the rules need to be changed to allow proxy voting.

/5 I’m also not sure what Alabama abortion rights and LGBT protests outside schools have to do with MPs’ maternity leave but hey ho. Parliament needs to join the 21st century but let’s not pretend MPs who want to care for their babies are victims. They’re not.

My heart bleeds for her....in my day (now I sound ancient 😔) there was no maternity leave. You fell pregnant, you left work at 8 months or whenever you needed to. When you wanted to, or needed to, out looked for another job. We survived & we didn’t whinge 🙄

Wouldn't Labour cover any major issues in her constituency like an employer would of anyone on maternity leave? Not just let everything pile up until they get back to work?

Has nothing to do with it. I compared one pregnant woman's lot to another. I know plenty of women that don't have Stella's cushty working conditions and compensation and they aren't saying they are hard done by.

I agree...it sounds a tough decision but many more women have far tougher decisions to make when having a baby. When I had mine in late 1980's few provisions for mother and no paternity leave for my husband. .its about priorities

She could help close that gender pay gap by going back to work asap whilst employing women on minimum wage to...hang on a sec.
