Labour MP @stellacreasy is pregnant and says she is “forced to choose between being an MP and a mum”. Her story is heartbreaking, but... 1/https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jun/17/pregnant-mp-maternity-leave-equality-stella-creasy …

/3 Most self-employed new mothers aren’t entitled to anything more than the statutory maternity pay pittance. They also face losing their work if they take months off, which MPs don’t.

/4 Stella could pay someone else to do much of her job for her while she is on maternity leave. The only real issue is voting in Parliament, where clearly the rules need to be changed to allow proxy voting.

/5 I’m also not sure what Alabama abortion rights and LGBT protests outside schools have to do with MPs’ maternity leave but hey ho. Parliament needs to join the 21st century but let’s not pretend MPs who want to care for their babies are victims. They’re not.

She's "pregnant not disabled" as my wife reminded me many times.

You couldn’t be more wrong. SC is saying that mothers should get maternity leave and that constituencies should get MP replacement if they choose to take maternity.

Her point is no MP can, has or would take 6 months off.

It's better than that, they get paid when in prison. Where else does that happen?

But it’s not about that it’s about the fact this is parliament and should be best most forward practice. I didn’t get much maternity either but I still
percent behind @stellacreasy. We should build women up and support each other not tear them down.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@stellacreasy is saying that constituents are the people who are disadvantaged because if an MP takes maternity leave, they're left with no parliamentary representation. It's also about the archaic voting rules - having to attend the HoC in order to vote or participate in debateThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

My heart bleeds for her. If I was a woman cab driver who was having a baby I’d lose cash everyday I was off the road. Worse if I was a single woman cab driver. Life is full of choices. Have baby then come back to politics!
-
Choices men who have children don’t need to make.
-
Um, I had a year off when our kids were very young being Dad while my wife worked.
-
And that’s great but much more rare. The default position is that it’s the woman who takes time off.
-
And that’s a choice couples make.
-
As if that’s a free choice not influenced whatsoever by several decades of social conditioning.

She literally says its not fair on the community who lose a mp and the mp should be replaced im guessing for the amount of time the mother is off for maternity nothing to do with her personally, there you go again twisting words to fuel hatred you really are an abhorrent shitebag
-
I guess her point is that many self employed women manage this choice without the benefit of a guaranteed £70k all the time. Maybe focusing on the predicament of privileged MPs is missing the mark in some way.
-
I agree that mps are privileged and live in a different world to everyone else, but the point the mp is making is that her constituency loses their representation not to do with her.
