The 1st time I ever heard the word “Londonistan” was by a Muslim journalist friend c2002 who said it was commonly used by Islamic extremists in the UK in reference to how easy it was for them to operate freely in our country. Bugger all to do with Sadiq Khan - not even an MP then

That said, I’m pretty sure Katie Hopkins and Donald Trump deliberately used “Londonistan” as a not-so-subtle attack on Sadiq Khan being a Muslim. But the word has a long established meaning already.

And also, it’s got bugger all to do with knife crime in London too - hence why it’s clear Hopkins and Trump were using the term Londonistan as a way to attack Khan simply for being Muslim.

When the French security said “ londonstan” more than 17 or 18 years ago (critical of our tolerance of islamists activists ) nobody, from the guardian to the bbc was bothered or suggested it was racist !

It came out of the France Secret Service/Cops long ago and is commonplace in the French mainstream press to describe London .. just google any French press daily

#Snap There was a documentary program back in early 2000s that referenced it. Especially in ref to Finsbury Park mosque & old hook arm Hamza.

Yes, it was said to have been coined by French security personnel in mockery of the British intelligence services' policy: an understanding with assorted Islamists operating from London that they could carry on unimpeded as long as they did not do anything violent in the UK.

“Londonistan” is the title of a Melanie Phillips book written in 2006.

As a french national (Sorry, I blame my parents) it is a term that has been used for decades by the french. Not too sure what Khan said but it predates him.

It was a term used by French counter-terrorism experts decades ago, to refer to our authorities' lax attitude to the Islamic extremists in our midst.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1359305/Why-France-lived-in-fear-of-Londonistan.html …

I thought it was neologism invented by the French secret service in reference to London being a hotbed for Islamist extremism? Back in days when Abu Hamza and Omar Bakri Muhammad were on the scene. But I’ve never heard it used in ref to knife crime before!

Melanie Phillips wrote “Londonistan” in 2006. The term had been in wide use before that.

We were putting 'stan' on the end of Bradford for decades. Glad you Londoners have finally caught up. Diversity is strength.

The French security services used the phrase back in the 90s due to concerns they expressed to UK security services about the militant/extremist Muslims that flocked to London.
