My daughter, 11, says she wants to start cycling to school.
Sadly the roads in my area are too dangerous for her to use, but when I asked a local councillor what my children should do, she said "cycle on the pavement."
So that is what she will do from Monday.

I thought it was illegal to ride on the pavement. Pavements are for pedestrians not cyclists!
-
I see many cars parked on pavements Stella and I'm sure you do too. Can I ask if you have ever reported any of them — and, if so, when and why?
-
What has cars parked on the pavement got to do with cyclists riding on pavements?!
-
In order to have got on to the pavement, they would have been driven on the pavement.

It is contrary to the Local Government Act of 1888. Your councillor should have more respect for the law and do more to make cycling safe. This solution absolves councils from making roads safe at the expense of pedestrians.
-
Ask Jacob Rees-Mogg, he was instrumental in its development.

Jeremy supports pavement cycling. He posted something about it not long ago, and when I objected to cyclists riding on pavements, I got derided by his virtuous and entitled cyclist followers. Their attitude seems to be that pedestrians are a bloody nuisance and collateral damage.
-
All of that misrepresents me, as you well know. You want my daughter, 11, to mix it with vans and HGVs. I can't allow that. I'm really sorry.
-
Ask her to walk or get the bus. Problem solved.
-
I had to walk nearly a mile in all weather conditions including snow 12” deep as an 11 year old in the seventies. It wasn’t a snowflake society back then though.

My daughters will also be cycling on the pavement where cycle infrastructure isn't provided Julia. Best thing you can do to stop that is to campaign for more investment in cycling and high quality cycle infrastructure. I look forward to seeing you call for that.
-
If cycle infrastructure isn’t provided, WALK. Other people should not be out at risk for a personal choice you wish to make. Pavements are for pedestrians, and they deserve their safety!

I see Julia HB falls on the side of the Royal Borough of Killing Children.
-
Is that nearby the Royal Borough of Fat Children Breathing SUV Fumes From All the Mommies and Daddies Driving Them to School up Until They're Eighteen?

Typical of a self centred cyclist. Why not tell your child she can’t cycle to school.
-
Yes, it's so 'self centred' to try and get your child to use an active, non polluting form of transport when we have both an obesity and a pollution crisis! Much better to drive her everywhere, belching out fumes, obviously!
-
And encourage them to break the law at the same time? Sounds like good advice to me.
-
We are encouraging them to stay safe because our society so backwards it doesn’t want to create safe spaces for them to use. Cyclist want to use bike lanes and safe streets not pavements!
