Where is your mandate? You were elected by the people as a Labour MP. Isn’t it about time you sought a democratic mandate via a by-election?

It doesn’t, but isn’t that part of the broken political system it was so imperative to change? If people wanted a Lib Dem MP, they could have voted for one in 2017.

They voted for Chuka Umunna and that’s who they have. If they don’t like him changing parties they can kick him out next time around. By insisting on by elections we would only strengthen the hand of leaders over their MPs.

Wrong. They voted Labour. Anyone changing parties should - by law - have to face re-election for the obvious fact that they have no mandate.

no Alex. the mandate is for the MP. By name. you put your cross in a box next to a named person (and yes, a party too). it's not a list system. the implications of this can be positive, or negative.

Wrong - name and party . As you admit. You cannot duck this. Change party and you’ve no mandate. It is very very simple. If it was name only on the ballot you’d be right and I wouldn’t be saying this. But it isn’t. And I am.

And does an MP have a mandate to cite against their own party? Your approach implies MPs must be loyal to the party line.

Can I butt in here? A candidate stands on a party manifesto so unless they publicly state to voters that they don’t agree with a manifesto commitment before polling day then, yes, they should be bound by that party manifesto.

I don't think any of Chuka's constituents were in any doubt about his position on Brexit. He's consistently been clearer than 99.9% of Labour MPs.

That assumes they all voted solely on Remain lines. In which case, why not just vote for the Bollocks to Brexit party then?

No, it assumes they listen to what their candidate says. Surely you dont assume most voters have read the manifestos either?
