Unfashionable opinion: Gary Lineker* isn’t personally responsible for the BBC licence fee decision so he shouldn’t be named and shamed for it simply because he’s a high earner. *i won’t @ him as he blocked me ages ago for taking the piss out of him

To be fair I tweeted a similar thing earlier too, I'm not a fan of his, but it's not his fault his employees decided to charge pensioners .. He could however come out and say something about the decision, as he was very vocal on a people's vote and agaisnt brexit..

It isn't the BBC it is a government decision that they have to implement. Voted for the government? If yes voted for this.

No it's not a government thing, they handed over control of this to the BBC, for which the BBC agreed as long as they could raise the license fee, which they have done numerous times since

The government handed it to the BBC because they didn’t want to be the bad guys for abolishing it for older people. They new this would happen.

What a lot of tosh. You cannot pin others’ decisions on Government just because you don’t like them. And it’s “knew” not “new”.

He gets targeted because he peddles the pro E.U. crap. BBC obviously give him a cut of what they get paid off the E.U. What else makes him more eligible for such a high wage compared to everyone else at the BBC? #Puppet #Muppet

the guy is paid £1.75 million a year to essentially present Match of the Day, a programme that people would still watch in their millions no matter who presented it! 😏 why does the BBC need to make him amongst their top earners? Makes no sense 🤷‍♂️

Poor comparison....MOTD is often presented by Manish Bhasin (who is excellent) and Gabby Logan...viewing figures never waver because the presenters are nowhere near as intrinsic to the shows appeal as they are 4 Top Gear!

He does MOTD2 a lot but not that often on MOTD. Figures don’t waiver as they are one offs. If linekar and crew went to itv/sky the figures would go with them.

99.99% of viewers watch MOTD purely for the football highlights...Lineker is nowhere near as important to that show as Graham Norton/Louis Theroux are to their shows 4 eg. The only way viewers go to ITV/Sky is if MOTD went there...not Lineker!

You may have a point Julia but in the popular imagination the arrogance of the BBC is personified in the arrogance of Gary Lineker.
