Being old isn’t a good reason to give people free TV. Older people are often poor; so give it to poor people. Often disabled; so give it to disabled people. Often lonely; so give it to lonely people. It’s actually unhelpful to stigmatise all old people as poor, lonely and sick.

Over 75s have been paying into the BBC all their lives so it would be nice if they could have something back.

I hate this argument. They pay the taxes they have to pay the same as everyone else.

Is the reason not for an appreciation of their contribution to society? A bus pass being another example? One of the characteristics of a decent society is how it treats the elderly.

How about the elderly who have limited access to social care because government spending that money giving free TV licences to middle class pensioners who can easily afford them.

I agree with this, but the BBC assured the govt if it was allowed to increase the license fee it would keep the free license. It's an ethical question. The big problem 4 the BBC is loads of leave votes are binning their license because of the pro-remain bias on news coverage.

It felt as if the Government were giving us something back for being Loyal, Hardworking, Defenders of the Relm. To have our Free TV Licence taken away is a travesty . We are the age group who have put more into building this country than other generations . You will be old soon

logic of that is increase the licence fee for rich viewers and listeners but a better solution is cancel a tax that is long past its sell by date fore everyone or maybe you want to send in an annual tax return to the BBC as well as to the Treasury

Or maybe get rid of the TV license completely? It’s a ridiculous tax that most of the world does not have.
