Also, it’s a bit rich of parents who send their children to private schools to accuse Oxbridge of “social engineering” when they *literally* pay for social engineering via their kids’ education, so they’re educated with other kids who are, you know, rich.

Some of us pay for our child to go to private (academically selective) schools simply because we want them taught to A grade standard in every class rather than to the national average. Nowt to do with wanting them to mix with rich kids. Couldn’t care less about their backgrounds

We all want our kids taught to that standard. It’s just that most of us can’t afford to pay for it. Don’t confuse wealth with virtue.

Why do your kids deserve ‘A grade standard in every class’ but I, as a state school student, do not? And by the way just because you go to a state school doesn’t mean you don’t receive a top education. Having a mix of abilities and backgrounds makes you much more socially aware.

"Academically selective"...give me a break....that's important but not as important as the network...you'd know as the privately educated offspring of a doctor...LOL...

Education should be the great leveller - it should be the ultimate meritocratic system. Success should be determined through hard work & ability, not because you can pay for more & know the right people. There is no place for private schools in meritocratic & cohesive societies.

Surely we can all agree that where you are educated should be immaterial in life, in jobs or university selection. If the current entry balance is decided on merit then it should satisfy us all.

Every school state or otherwise, should have the resources to be able to teach to the best possible standards. Your children are very privelleged. I hope they'll appreciate it.

It's to do with the difference between academic selection, versus a mandated state education. If your child is state educated, they have to be taught everything the government dictates on. Independent schools make up their own system.

Independent schools (generally) have terrible progress rates. It's easy to teach clever kids already at the top of the game. It's much harder to get those less fortunate up to a grade.

It should never be construed that just because you have wealth you can buy your way into positions of power and influence. Regrettably, that is the perception.

There is no way the State CAN push it's way into the same level of academic excellence. Take Eton. It might as well be 'Sign here and you will get into Westminster'. Why? Because the wealthy people can buy in the 'respected' and 'knowledgeable'.
