No, you shouldn’t. No one should be banned from standing for elected office - even horrible people who say horrible things. It’s up to voters not to vote for those people. It’s this little thing we’ve come up with that we like to call “democracy”.https://twitter.com/VictoriaLIVE/status/1125691993139470336 …

I can see where you’re coming from but I do disagree with you on this one Julia- That is quite dangerous and massively inappropriate and criminal offences/ hate crimes can’t go un-noticed. I don’t like Jess Phillips but she shouldn’t have to put up with this from a MEP candidate.

I didn’t say it wasn’t. And I didn’t say she should. He’s a nasty piece of work and if he said the same about me, I’d pay him a personal visit. I’m saying if he has broken the law, arrest him. But he should still be entitled to stand for election.

I saw the video, It was a joke about the media being outraged at his 1st tweet 4yrs ago & to apologise he said ~ “my stance of not even raping can change with enough media pressure”. This was in a video of many other jokes. I don’t think hes nasty, just v darker sense of humour.

If people voted for the person then fine but they don’t. They vote for the party. Do you think more or less people in this country know their candidates or just vote for the party?

https://youtu.be/CrwINQIFncg  if you watch, you can see and hear it is clearly a joke among other clear jokes, in writing it loses its tone & context, similar to writing sarcastically, the sarcasm doesn’t come across, thus losing the context and tone it was said in.

I too understand your principle. But, those who wish to stand for Office, should be subject to stringent vetting, including family, friends and associates. Part of an overhaul of democracy should see a discussion around what might bar a person from standing. Some things should.

“Vetting”? So what criteria would you put in place? Colour of skin? Accent? Educational attainment? Gender? Political views? How telegenic someone is? And who does the vetting? The Establishment?🤔

I said we should have a discussion about criteria. Sometimes, past behaviour should prevent people from occupying certain positions, or doing certain things. It’s called a consequence. We have vetting for many occupations, why should an MP be any different?

“Vetting” is carried out by someone in authority There are already legal constraints on who is eligible to stand for Parliament Given the context of your tweet it seems you’re looking to disqualify those who don’t meet your standards of behaviour

My personal, expected standards of behaviour don’t come into it. The current legislation means someone convicted of drink driving, and getting 18mnths can’t stand. A convicted contact child sex offender, with a community sentence can, and, disclosure not necessarily required.
