The Greens have a bizarre policy combo: let’s Remain in the EU - but you won’t be allowed to get on a plane and fly there for your holidays. Okeydokes.https://twitter.com/CarolineLucas/status/1124235628043034624 …

You can travel by train across the whole of Europe, you can also get the ferry to Northern Spain from the UK
-
For a weekend trip?
-
(Checks Eurostar and the proper high speed rail networks in Europe) Yep, no chance of this here "weekend trip" malarkey. Best get to the airport. This is the *only* way for a weekend trip.

*checks hi speed rail links from Leeds to nice*

I’ve never flown to Italy. Ever. Been loads of times. London to Paris in 2h20 from £58 return then Paris to Venice overnight with couchette from €29, or Paris to Turin by TGV in 5h40 from €29 - it’s all part of the holiday, no airports no flights: https://www.seat61.com/Italy.htm .
-
I go to Italy a few times a year on the train. Paris to Turin, nice Hotel for an overnight stop across the road from Turin Porta Sousa then in Rome just before lunch :)
-
Hi Rose - Which is your suggested hotel outside Turin Porta Susa, and is it a good ‘un?
-
Hi - either Hotel Dock Milano (3*) which is about £45-£50 a night incl. breakfast, or Hotel Diplomatic (4*) which is slightly more expensive but sometimes has cheap offers on http://Booking.com Both in Via Cernaia next door to each other.
-
Thanks, I’ll investigate those & might add as suggestions. The Turin Palace gets great reports, next to Turin Porta Nuova where trains to Florence, Rome, Naples start, but means taxi ride as the TGVs from Paris use Porta Susa. Easier to keep it a same-station change!
-
Absolutely. I've been doing it for years now, and as a woman often travelling alone, I'm happier just crossing the road into a safe Hotel instead of hanging about waiting for taxis.
-
This is by far the best way to hijack this incoherent and lazy tweet and has made me smile! The best holiday I've had in a long time involved the train from London to Florence, and I doubt I'll use an anodyne plane to get to Europe again...

And to Spain, London to Paris by Eurostar then Paris-Barcelona by TGV from €59, lovely journey. Top tip, lunch at the amazing Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon, http://www.le-train-bleu.com . For train info, photos, video guide & tickets see https://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm

I think you'll find that all the toll booths are jam packed on weekends & especially bank holidays.
