Author Sharna Jackson complains that “white characters are the default in children’s books”. In Britain, yes. But that is not the case in books in Nigeria or Somalia or India or Bangladesh. Hmmmm, now can anyone think of a reason why that might be...?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-47883118 …

Also I don't see Sharna ' complaining' she is legit just talking about the facts, the stats are in that article. That representation in books SUCK!

She clearly thought it was a bad thing or she wouldn’t have bothered talking about, so I think “complaining” is a fair description.

Julia I was born and bred in Britain, why should white be the default? Why is that ok? My childhood was never seeing myself, on books or really TV. This needs to change. Britain is a beautiful multi-culture society, so in all media our SOCIETY needs to be represented!

It’s the default because most of the people in Britain are white and most of the people writing books in Britain are white and most people write about what they know. Maybe you should write a children’s book so you can choose the characters if it bothers you so much.

I’m not responsible for what other people tweet. There are plenty of “diverse” characters in children’s books. I doubt that my child cares what colour skin the characters have in the books she enjoys.

But Julia there aren’t PLENTY diverse characters there are a few - like the stats said and what @sharnajackson has done is add more - we should celebrate that that don’t u agree?

Only if your only vector for diversity is superficial things like skin color. Otherwise, there is a ton of diversity.
