Fact. There are plenty of insects. Pollenation is happenng. There are plenty of crops. There is more food on this planet than ever before. Fewer people are going hungry than ever before. Act now. And carry on as we are because it’s working REALLY well. Fact. #ExtinctionRebellionhttps://twitter.com/MrMatthewTodd/status/1117795694549655554 …

Pollinator declines have reduced the numbers of apples on trees, the yield of oilseed, and wildflower seed set. The world may be more complex than these people's banner, but the experts are agreed that insect declines are happening and need solutions @Buzz_dont_tweet

Declining numbers (which is verifiable but only in some species and the reasons are. It clearcut) isn’t remotely the same as “no insects”. The other claims are even more spurious.

It is true that the banner has made full use of its artistic licence. But insects are declining (roughly speaking in the UK 60-70% of species heading downwards) and that will result in less food and less variety of food unless we take action to avoid that future.

You shouldn't have to be defending this sort of nonsense. I wonder at the motives of someone trying to propagate it. Extinction rebellion has brought the debate into the mainstream arena, and bloody good luck to them. If they have to use a spot of hyperbole to do it, so be it.

What the banner is trying to say is that IF there are no insects, there will be no food chain, ergo no humans. It would be a bit silly to read it as saying there ARE ‘no insects’ ATM.

They're talking about where we are heading, towards a future with no insects. And by your own pedantry standards they are correct. They aren't saying that there are no insects now, they're saying IF there's no insects left there WILL BE no future for us...

Although cockroaches are actually one of the most overlooked pollinators. Even in UK small native cockroaches can be seen on carrot flowers on the Cornish coast. However, I don't think they could replace the efforts of our wild bees anytime soon!
