Barnier in Dublin says that if the UK leaves EU without a deal, “we would not discuss anything with the UK until there is an agreement for Ireland & N Ireland, as well as for citizens rights and the financial settlement”.

Like thousands of others I am so sick and tired of Barniers’s jingoistic inflammatory comments. When he has finished throwing the EU’S toys out of its pram, maybe we can sit down and have a chat like grown people, who have joined-up-thought processes!

Surely this simply informs the UK of what to expect in No Deal scenario? I, like you, am no fan of inflammatory comments, but this feels like a stating of the EU’s forward negotiating stance. Julia is fine with this - but others may not be. At least the implications are now clear

Your points are well taken, but in this scenario I think the RoI might just be cutting off its nose to spite its face. Varadkar is either a very smart poker player or a reckless politician! RoI may get full on support from EU; but without trade with U.K., that’s a brave move!

Arguably no braver than the UK attempting the same approach with the EU-27 ;-)

12% of Irish exports go to U.K.; 44% of U.K. exports go to rest of EU. Ireland is less vulnerable than U.K. on that basis to disruption. Ireland has diversified its economy.

Oh well - what are we all getting fired up about? If the U.K. does not matter to RoI, why does this problem consume so much of our time?

Because of its impact on the border, and peace in Northern Ireland. Overall trade is important but peace is a primary issue.
