Both sides made claims that turned out to be untrue. If they were 'palpably' untrue, why would 50% have thought otherwise?

The appeal of Brexit (like Scottish independence) was that it offered people a blank canvas on which to project their hopes for the future. To opponents of both, these hopes were fantasies. But neither side could be absolutely certain of that till the hopes were put to the test.

Both also required the demonisation of caution and I refuse to believe many advocates of both didn't know they were doing that. But indy was at least about an unconvincing future. Brexit was a hark back to an unconvincing past.

That's a London Remain fantasy version of Brexit - empire bollocks and all that. Really, speak to a spread of leavers. The Brits were always sceptical about the mad EU project. No-one asked their permission for 40 years. Then they did.

Of course - understood by any leaver I've ever met as self-govt. It's the norm. Honestly, where are these leavers wanting no foreigners in the premiership, reversal of Supermac winds of change, holidays in Blackpool, Lonnie Donegan and a coal-based economy?
