Genuinely worried that a news journalist of so much experience didn’t bother to check whether kids are already taught about climate change at school. They are.https://twitter.com/JohnSimpsonNews/status/1107368874322862082 …

Four Oxford schoolgirls have started a petition to make lessons on climate change compulsory in schools, & nearly 40,000 people have so far signed it. Since this the most important problem our planet faces, shouldn’t our children be taught about it?

It's not *compulsory*. The national curriculum does not have to be followed by academies (54% of secondary pupils). Even if it did, coverage of climate change in national curriculum is cursory. Genuinely worried that a ‘journalist’ of your experience didn’t bother to check that.

The national curriculum is also not compulsory in independent schools (7% of pupils). Add faith schools and that over 2/3rds of pupils who do not have to learn about climate change.

Even for the others, climate change gets about the same focus in the national curriculum as ox-bow lakes. And you’re seriously suggesting @JohnSimpsonNews is wrong to highlight a campaign that points out this might not be proportionate to the global risk?

That's not true. My SO taught it to year 9s just last week. It was far more detailed, spanned over several weeks. And that's just Geog. In an Academy.

I was talking merely about the level of attention in the National Curriculum requirements. Some schools teach it brilliantly. Some are free to ignore it altogether. That inconsistency, I guess, is the point of the campaign to make it compulsory.

Honestly, Julia... Your expectations are far too high. Do you really expect journalists to do any sort of research before they publish tweets/articles? I think we have seen that if the story fits their agenda that they will publish anyway.

It’s not compulsory though. I’m genuinely worried that someone who claims to be a credible journalist wouldn’t check this.

Isn't the key word COMPULSORY. How can one be sure EVERY school teaches it unless it's part of the National Curriculum and enforced?

It's status within the NC has also been greatly diminished if you listen to teachers. It's now a footnote to Geography, not science.
