It's not *compulsory*. The national curriculum does not have to be followed by academies (54% of secondary pupils). Even if it did, coverage of climate change in national curriculum is cursory. Genuinely worried that a ‘journalist’ of your experience didn’t bother to check that.

The national curriculum is also not compulsory in independent schools (7% of pupils). Add faith schools and that over 2/3rds of pupils who do not have to learn about climate change.
-
Even for the others, climate change gets about the same focus in the national curriculum as ox-bow lakes. And you’re seriously suggesting
@JohnSimpsonNews is wrong to highlight a campaign that points out this might not be proportionate to the global risk? -
That's not true. My SO taught it to year 9s just last week. It was far more detailed, spanned over several weeks. And that's just Geog. In an Academy.
-
I was talking merely about the level of attention in the National Curriculum requirements. Some schools teach it brilliantly. Some are free to ignore it altogether. That inconsistency, I guess, is the point of the campaign to make it compulsory.

Honestly, Julia... Your expectations are far too high. Do you really expect journalists to do any sort of research before they publish tweets/articles? I think we have seen that if the story fits their agenda that they will publish anyway.

Some people put the mouth in gear without engaging the brain. I'm with the students.

It’s not compulsory though. I’m genuinely worried that someone who claims to be a credible journalist wouldn’t check this.
-
To be fair to Julia, I don’t think even she would label herself a credible journalist.
-
Yes, it was said tongue in cheek

Isn't the key word COMPULSORY. How can one be sure EVERY school teaches it unless it's part of the National Curriculum and enforced?
-
It is in the NC.
-
Which academies are not obliged to follow.
-
Oh good grief. I was replying to his asserting that it wasn't in the national curriculum. You certainly won't find me defending academies...but they DO have to teach science
-
It's status within the NC has also been greatly diminished if you listen to teachers. It's now a footnote to Geography, not science.

In Scottish schools my 13 year old was forced to write a "stop climate change" letter to our local Member of Parliament 1 Government decides AGW is a problem and raises CO2 taxes 2 Government tells schools to preach AGW 3 Kids forced to tell Government to do more on AGW 4 Repeat!pic.twitter.com/ShbTijirwX
