This Amber Rudd colour row stuff is so ridiculous. Benedict Cumberbatch fell into exactly the same trap. Can't we all agree that what matters is intent?

think a big thing here is how exposed people in this country have been to US culture. this is what tripped up Cumberbatch in the States. It seemed that the talk show he was on was the first time he'd heard a distinction between the phrases. the literary record bears this out...pic.twitter.com/qtAExDOtjt

the distinction clearly does matter. let's not chastise those who simply didn't know about it. especially when in both of these cases the people hounded were trying to make important progressive points.

I hope we can see a @SkyData poll on this tomorrow. would wager the country at large overwhelmingly doesn't know about the important distinction. my generation mostly will. atlanticists mostly will. those of older generations will not.

Amber Rudd is my age so knows the difference. But polling will show that most people don’t think she had any bad intent. Most people will be utterly perplexed by this.

You know sometimes I wonder what our forebears who often had insufficient food, places to sleep and clothes to wear would have made of the way we are now. Does all this PC nonsense matter a jot? No.

It’s been deliberately whipped up for party political reasons and because some people have been dining out on the racism card for time immemorial.

It was an opportunity for political points scoring therefore it had to be used accordingly. Zero intent. Rudd isn't a racist and she's apologised if she's caused offence. It's a non-story, we've got far better things to be worried.

Context is all and @AmberRuddHR was clearly being supportive of @HackneyAbbott at the time she made the remark. The taking of offence by the latter is opportunistic and unfair. @AmberRuddHR is one of our very few honest and competent political leaders and deserves better.
