How does anyone reach adulthood and believe this craphttps://twitter.com/andrew_lilico/status/1102230984093777921?s=21 …

I've lived & worked in many countries. Some are beautiful. Some exiting. Some exotic. Some dangerous. But when I was in *Britain* it was different. When I looked out of the window - in Chester, or Oxford, or London or wherever - there was...something there. It *mattered*.+

I’m well read, have travelled to 46 countries and lived in 3 others, but I will always feel an affinity for Britain. I imagine most people of most nationalities would feel the same. This is not a weird thing.

He didn’t say he had an affinity for Britain - I have one too, and like coming back and eating Stilton and walking in the hills. he said Britain was special and mattered in a way that other countries don’t because of its history and undefined duty, possibly bestowed on it by God

Indeed - I have an incredible affection for UK & even moreso for the five mile stretch of north and east London I’ve lived in most of my life! But I also know I’d feel that way if I had grown up in south east London or France or Neptune. AL appears not to.

Well, I’m not sure God had anything to do with it but it’s a matter of fact that Britain has played an extraordinarily influential role in world history in the last few centuries. We are not A.N. Other country.

There's a difference between "affinity for Britain ", and "believing Britain matters in a way other countries do not".

No Julia. I am sure most people in every country feel affinity for their country. He was expressing English exceptionalism that somehow we are better than all the rest. That way lies the dangers of nationalism.
