Why are we told we need pay rises for MPs when there is no shortage of people wanting to be MPs? There *are* shortages of doctors, nurses, teachers, police, prison officers, social workers and paramedics. So why don’t we pay them more to attract more applicants?https://twitter.com/SkyNewsBreak/status/1101104288112263170 …

u miss the point methinks, the calibre of our MP's is pitiful .. instead of 650 we only need around 300 but pay them £200,000 p.a. and be accountable & sackable to their constituents not their parties, just watch the calibre of those same MP's rise

In the early 30s MPs were paid 25% what they are paid now in real terms with minimal expenses. The idea they need to be highly paid is a total myth.

They're lucky it's not performance related pay. That absolute shower masquerading as MPs should be paying us back for the rest of their lives.

Pay rises for MP's that can't even honour manifesto commitments. 🤦‍♂️

Based on the calibre of many MP's (as shown by recent Brexit related events), I think there is a good case for lowering their salary significantly (c. £35K would be reasonable). No allowances for second houses either, the state could buy a modest local hotel for overnight stays.

Anything above the national minimum wage would be far too much for the arrogant lying benefit cheating democracy denying troughers who's arses polish the green leather benches. They are so keen on a People's Vote, let's have one on your pay awards. Simple choice, accept or refuse

My daughter is a paediatric sister. She gets less than half MPs salary out is worth twice as much IMO.

Only twice? I'd say 5 or 6 times easily and it still wouldn't be enough.

I think you need to take a bigger picture view. MPs salaries at current levels will never attract the right people. The Brexit shambles is testimony to that. We need real world experience and leadership not failures who can’t make it in the real world.

Nobody should be allowed to be an MP if they have only worked for a political party since university. They should all have to have worked for at least 10 years in outside industry with 'hands on' experience - just not out of a PPE textbook.

Given the appalling state of both the Tory and Labour parties and their constant failure to deliver anything, they should be losing their jobs not getting a pay rise.

Considering the majority of MP's are desperate to be controlled by their EU masters and decisions taken away from them, perhaps a pay cut would have been more appropriate.
