What exactly is the “age appropriate way” for my 12yr old daughter to be told how we’ve imported the barbaric medieval practice of cutting off a girl’s clitoris & sewing her vagina shut so her future husband can be sure he’s marrying a virgin? Just wondering...https://twitter.com/CCHQPress/status/1099600682687049729 …

Surely 'the issue' is what inappropriate issues we're importing and having to educate our children about. Next up: "How to tell your child why there are heads in their bins and that it's ok to feel afraid sometimes".

They could teach FGM/Halal meat production on a double bill

Agree. They'd be better spending time and effort educating the 5% who practice it than the 95% who don't. Imagine the conversation..dear daughter theres a backward religious group who cut girls bits off, enough to frighten a child who it wont affect in the first place.

No My kids are in their mid 20s and I wouldn't have discussed this with them anyway, boats sailed on that. Awareness is one thing, but the fact it's illegal in the UK surely those practicing it should be the group who is targeted for prevention.

Julia, you ask when fgm became a big issue in the UK? I'm surprised you haven't taken the trouble to find out! It is a very big issue running into thousands of girls being mutilated every year. Please research before digging yourself a deeper hole.

But you can also remove the stigma. You don’t have to say something is good to make help accessible. And what happens if your daughter becomes friends with a girl who has suffered this? Do you want her to be understanding and kind, or ignorant and judgmental?

You keep saying there is more than one ideology that promote FGM. I know about Islam. What are the others?

A lot of african/asian cultures have it as well. Where there are doweries involved - "Purity" is required so far more lightly to have such barbarism involved. Probably the reason it started is to reduce adultery - no feeling = less chance of running off to be with a better man.

Thanks Matt. Are they Islamic or do they follow another religion? I always understood it to be an Islamic tradition but am willing to learn otherwise.
