What exactly is the “age appropriate way” for my 12yr old daughter to be told how we’ve imported the barbaric medieval practice of cutting off a girl’s clitoris & sewing her vagina shut so her future husband can be sure he’s marrying a virgin? Just wondering...https://twitter.com/CCHQPress/status/1099600682687049729 …

It’s patently not nonsense. The more people are informed about something the more they will talk about it. The more they talk about it, the more people will hear. It’s kind of common sense. You may not want your daughter to hear about it but that doesn’t make his point “nonsense”
-
No it patently is nonsense because in tteaching everyone about it in this manner, as if more than a few are ever likely to encounter it, it's an attempt to dilute responsibility rather than be seen to target exactly whom they ought to be targeting.
-
If I tell all children in the classroom that they need to go to a certain room when the tornado siren wails I'm not diluting responsibility, I'm increasing the likelihood that the correct action will be taken and lives will be saved. Same thing goes for fgm convos.
-
Nah. A tornado is indiscriminate. FGM doesn't just happen to people. It's targeted. A Christian or secular humanist girl born to an indigenous British family is extremely unlikely to be at risk of someone mutilating her vulva clitoris.
-
But that Christian or secular humanist (?!?!) girl may befriend a girl who is at risk, has a chat with her who grows up now understanding it's wrong. Again, targeted education isn't mutually exclusive and we're currently ignoring the targeted hard work done by FGM charities.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. By educating white girls you're giving them the means to look out for their black friends. It's really that simple.

Exactly. The authorities are too scared to target those particular 'communities' for fear of being branded racist etc. So instead, the whole bloody country has to be 'enlightened' in their cosy little ways.
-
Again, this isn’t just about the people who it could DIRECTLY happen to. It’s about engaging people who may be able to prevent it or raise awareness of instances where it has.

And this should be compulsory in all mosques. But this won’t happen, same as ofsted.

-
Ah, I was wondering how long someone mention religion. FGM started pre-Islam and isn't only related to Islam. Christians also practise it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation#Religion …pic.twitter.com/B43eZmKVGV

Talk about trying to defend the indefensible
NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!!!!! Your too PC for your own good and in denial. -
Exactly how am I defending it? I find it just as intolerable as you. I'm just pointing out that it's not an Islam-only problem.
-
And you’ll have to point out where I was saying that and where what I said was wrong in anyway?!
my statement stands.

Warnings back up with well funded investigations and actual punishment according to our laws. We’ve got to show very forcefully FGM is never going to be tolerated.
-
Trevor, how do you plan on funding these “well funded” investigations when the current state of the NHS means they rely on donations of things such as shower gel in order to treat patients. Or is it with more of that cash we’ll save when we get out of the EU?
-
One way is to stop using resources on pursuing ‘hurty feelings’ so called crimes and use for real crimes. Met police alone have 900 officers on internet duty searching for ‘hate’ messages.
-
You're angry that 900 officers are being used in this way, and not angry at a Government who since 2010, have cut Police budgets by 19% which led to 21,000 fewer officers? Makes sense.
-
Now I am suspicious, neither of you accept FGM is such a vile crime that must be dealt with so it is irradiated from our society. FGM is a barbaric, heinous crime and has no place anywhere. Those that carry it out or support it should be locked up for a very long time.
-
Kindly point me to exactly where either of us have said that. What we're disagreeing with is how Julia has turned this in to a binary issue that educating *everybody* is somehow bad when she thinks it needs targeted education (which is already happening if she bothered to check)
-
It’s what you didn’t say. You both avoided the fgm subject, wanting to go off on a tangent about either the EU or the government. It is well known where in our society this crime is committed and targeting that community will bring the best results.
-
I clearly stated in conversation with you and others that it’s so important and the reason it should be tackled from multiple angles is because it’s not just about those at risk but raising flags about classmates and friends who may be victims.
