Just approaching the border between France and Switzerland...

They agreed to be in Schengen. This isn't that difficult. And yes, if we agreed to be in Schengen, we could enjoy the same freedom of movement that Switzerland enjoys at their border. But we're not. Are we?
-
So
@JuliaHB1 are you saying you would rather be in Schengen, but not in the EU? Therefore having open borders, but with no influence. - 1 more reply

After 2+ years, the UK has not even managed to fully “roll over” the very complicated Swiss-EU treaties and agreements. How long do you think it will take them to negotiate a tailor-made UK-EU version? (Even assuming the UK can agree what to ask for!)https://twitter.com/coppetainpu/status/1098944531075158016?s=21 …

I'm assuming
@JuliaHB1 didn't have more than 1kg of meat/1kg of butter (per person), otherwise she should have stopped and paid import duty. In a truck with commercial goods? Quite a lot more than 20 seconds even if with paperwork prepared in advance. https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home/information-individuals/travel-and-purchases--allowances-and-duty-free-limit/importation-into-switzerland/duty-free-allowances--foodstuffs--alcohol-and-tobacco.html …pic.twitter.com/QxxTUWKg3M

And if the UK wants to continue to control its borders the way it does now, ie checking passports at the the border (aside from the Irish Common Travel Area), then there's no way it can be done in 20 seconds. Machines struggle to read one passport in 20 seconds.

And … we’re back to wanting the benefits of membership without paying for them. The price for that ‘mutually convenient solution’ is accepting free movement of people. Which is fine by me. You?
-
There is a hard border though too - some days (when they decide to check) it takes French people hours to get over the border at Geneva to go to work.

This is hilarious, tragic, and angering. How could you only now start to half understand the issues you've been paid to tell about for 3 years?
-
She does understand, she’s paid to misinform.

Now try the same crossing but in a HGV filled with goods. How complicated will you find that?
-
Of even skiing across with a backpack full of perfume or bottles of whisky which you then try to sell in Zurich.

"We can also come to a mutually convenient solution." Do you want shengen?

Schengen. Free movement of people not goods. I thought this was the absolute opposite of what you wanted

Try doing that with a lorry full of goods, you'll be waiting at that border for hours!
