Just approaching the border between France and Switzerland...

Because you want the benefits of membership without the obligations.
-
No I don’t. I want the benefits (for both sides) of a free trade deal. I don’t want free movement. But we already have passport controls at our borders so no need for any longer process.
-
FTA for both sides and then UK being able to negotiate its own FTAs? Why would the EU countries do that and undermine their own competitiveness and standards. Of course they won’t. You want single market you stay in EU.
-
Why on earth would the EU do a free trade deal with Japan? Or Canada? Or attempt to do one with the US?
-
Try to go to Tokyo now and see if takes 20 seconds.
-
The EU *has* done a free http://trade.deal with Japan.

Oh dear, Sasha hasn’t been looking at any facts lately, has she? Ps. I’m more of a rosé kinda gal.

this was literally covered In the first week. Fom is tied to free trade by eu. Can't have 1 not other hence schengen
-
Yes. FOM is a different thing from easy and quick movement across borders of friendly nations. Next?
-

But France (that country you crossed into Switzerland from) is in schengen. Sorry if this is all too complicated
-
Yes, but Switzerland isn’t in the EU. They came to a mutually convenient solution with the EU. We can also come to a mutually convenient solution. What about that do you find complicated?
-
They agreed to be in Schengen. This isn't that difficult. And yes, if we agreed to be in Schengen, we could enjoy the same freedom of movement that Switzerland enjoys at their border. But we're not. Are we?
-
So
@JuliaHB1 are you saying you would rather be in Schengen, but not in the EU? Therefore having open borders, but with no influence. - 1 more reply

Because you're in the EU now. How do you not get this? It sounds like you like being part of the EU and the benefits it gives you but want to leave because.....well who knows.
-
What fta agreement is that Julia? Do we have one in place? Will there be one by March? In 2020? In 2021? Will it be the easiest deal in history? Do you trust any government (present or future) to deliver one?
