Just approaching the border between France and Switzerland...

And, yes, I know Switzerland is in Schengen. But we aren’t now, and we won’t be after Brexit, so why does anything have to change if the British and EU leaders are sensible and agree that it doesn’t need to?

It actually took decades of negotiation but there we are.

May I suggest that, rather than

Bloody hell. 20 seconds to dock and unload all of your cargo? That's impressive.

But you're not a goods vehicle. You're not even a good person.

Need an articulated lorry to carry her BAGGAGE.

She's also not very articulate!

Ermm - total misrepresentation of the facts - each morning and each evening it can take 20-30 mins to travel over the French Swiss border. Truck are stacked up on each side waiting for their paperwork to be checked .
-
Absolutely. I cross the French-Swiss border at Bardonnex near Geneva twice a day. The queues can be over 10km long some days.

Now try it with an HGV full of pharmaceuticals!
#justsaying -
Why what will the EU do to stop it?.
-
They will delay the vehicle for paperwork and possible examination. They will charge duty on the goods AND any fuel the delivery vehicle has in its tanks over a certain amount. Shortest time ever, 45 minutes, longest, 12 hours then timed out for onward travel! Not easy.
-
Save that the EU is a party to the WTO’s “Pharmaceutical Tariff Elimination Agreement”, which provides that no tariffs can be charged on finished pharmaceuticals.

Now you’re advocating we join Schengen? Because Switzerland’s in Schengen. Total freedom of movement. It’s nice, isn’t it?

Are you implying the uk should adopt the same agreement the Swiss have? Which is fair. But doesntvthat actually mean you get less say and ironically mean we will then have unelected beaurcrates defining our laws and regulation? Do the Swiss have a say in how the eu is run?
-
No, but CH isn’t in a customs union and has independent trade deals with the world, inc EU. CH is a not a member of the Single Market, but has bilateral agreements that align it. The UK could do the same were it to choose after Brexit.
-
But those agreements means the Swiss have to adhere to do laws and regulations to gain access to agree? So would poaiti9n is better having such agreement or being able to have an influence in those laws/regulations?
-
How would this affect the mantra of takibg back control. While also literally having unelected eu beaucrates changing and amending eu regulation and law. Thrvuk woukd have zero say. We will have to like it or lump it?
-
The EU parliament is elected. The UK has more unelected politicians than the EU and every member state combined.
-
The was my point. We can currently elect meps. With a Swiss deal we cannot. If brexit can provide that thry can get a deal that is better than what the Swiss has.. why proceed with a deal that leaves us worse off?
-
EU is also clear that they will never do a deal like that with the Swiss again. Too much hassle. At least the Swiss make stuff the EU wants. Very little of what UK makes isn't available in EU or via hundreds of EU trade deals.
-
Firstly, we’re not taking ourselves out of the market. We’re just pulling out of the decision making on how it’s run, but will still trade with it as non members. Tariffs instead of membership fees.
