Funny that, eh? I guess there must be *some* advantages to being married to the person in whose name criminal prosecutions are brought...https://twitter.com/cpsuk/status/1096001876292784128 …

I’m afraid it’s probably as simple as he’s handed in his licence to avoid prosecution. As has happened to numerous elderly people over the years including one I represented at a magistrates ct many years ago. I’m surprised you’d make such crass remarks without a bit of research

Well bearing in mind I’ve acted for someone where exactly the same happened “probably” is the best I can give.If truth be known he was probably asked to voluntarily hand in his licence to avoid the consideration of prosecution. It’s not unheard of, there’s not always a conspiracy

He said sun blinded him. I guess no way of proving otherwise beyond reasonable doubt. And considering he has surrendered his licence, an expensive court case to result in him being forced to surrender his licence/ban just wouldn't be in public interest.

If the sun blinded him, he couldn’t see the road so shouldn’t have pulled out

Actually, a perfectly reasonable decision under the CPS public interest test. HRH is 97 & has voluntarily given up his licence. What would be the point?

I remember a similar approach back in the late 1980s when my first head of chambers gave up his licence (he was well over 80) and was not prosecuted following a collision.

Not really, any 97 year old who did similar in a non fatality or life changing accident would get the same treatment after handing in their licence, it happened to an elderly lady neighbour of mine a few years ago.

To be fair, the vast majority of drivers who are responsible for accidents are not prosecuted. The offences of dangerous driving, careless driving etc. are normally given to deliberate unavoidable actions. I can't see this being the case, but all evidence is not public.

Sorry Julia I hate to disagree. I had 90 year old relative who created a worse accident. The police took no action and his relatives took away his car keys. There are many cases like this.
