Evidence of wage depression by immigrants is limited and contentious. But even if it weren't: is there anything socialist about making immigrants, rather than unscrupulous employers, the villain here?https://twitter.com/GloriaDePiero/status/1094974877927424000 …

Freedom of Movement, when it's framed as a reciprocal right, has consistently been v popular in the UK. Latest Eurobarometer data shows 74% support it, only 17% against. Local pressures caused by EU27 migration can be addressed without stripping 65M Brits of their FoM rights.pic.twitter.com/6UKaVnrRek

The problem is not the Bulgarians or the Romanians or the Slovakians. It's the Etonians.

Except it’s not a simple matter of supply & demand. That buys into the fallacy there’s a fixed amount of work in the economy. Immigrants spend their earnings, creating jobs, as well as competing with local residents for jobs. Evidence on overall impact on wages is mixed.

Indeed - plus we have a negative birthrate (1.8) we’ll need tax payers for all those pensions...

For demand & supply to work in the simple form as you assume one would need a homogeneous labour force as well as matching homogeneous job market. And cost of moving labour into any place in the UK must be zero. None of that is given. Otherwise their would be no job for you.

How come our population has grown for 1000s of years and we never seem to run out of jobs?

Yes the system we have now is a free market in Labour. You Julia want to put government controls on this free market. Not your usual position, why is that?
-
Wrong kind of free market for neocon exporters of social immobility.

No, it isn’t a simple matter of supply and demand. Quite wrong, actually.

Every person creates demand, so it's not simple.

Employers want labour as cheap as possible, it's up to governments to decide how cheap that can be. Employers won't complain as long as there is a level playing field with their competitors.

Your tweet merely demonstrates your lack of knowledge of even most basic economics. Most GCSE economics curricula cover point that employment is elastic. Definitely NOT a “simple matter of supply and demand” Fact you have platform for this nonsense makes you dangerous

Julia, firstly reciprocal right of free movement is valued by a clear majority of the population. Indeed like many other Brexiters you are behind the curve on public attitudes to migration. Also worth checking out the ‘lump of labour’ fallacy before spouting off.pic.twitter.com/SjYU5WQmbE
