Here @JuliaHB1 claims Spain ceding Gibraltar to UK in perpetuity was about "self-determination".
In fact, in 1713 at Utrecht Spain ceded its claim to Britain, one sovereign state to another.
The local population had already left, in 1704.
Not at all about "self-determination".https://twitter.com/JuliaHB1/status/1095357137763688450 …

Ooh Julia wants a referendum in Gibraltar!
-
There was a referendum back in 2002 on whether they should share sovereignty with Spain. 99% against. In reality, the current status of Gibraltar is the result of self-determination - it'd almost be part of Spain by now if its people wanted that, regardless of the treaty.

Dude a referendum done in 2002 pre Brexit is well and truly in the bin. Post Brexit as Julia says, the ppl of Gibraltar deserve a referendum.
-
Speaking as one of those people, we don’t need a referendum. We don’t see why, in our case, the EURef vote should have an impact on anything else. The answer on sovereignty remains the same as it was in the refs in 2002 and 1969.

Interesting thing to say when you live in London now isn’t it?
-
Not that it’s relevant but I already lived in London long before 2016. I stayed here after Uni, met my other half stayed.
-
It’s not relevant that you entered a debate about a possible future ref in Gibraltar yet no longer live there? Ok yes. That makes sense. As a matter of interest. How do you think Gibraltar would cope with a hard border with spain?
-
My family does live there and have been there 300 years, many of my still friends & this issue takes up far too many of our conversations, i campaigned during the 2002 ref and have been staunchly remain through. I think a hard(er) border would be bad for people living both sides
