The UK government will soon be spending as much on HS2 each year - one line! - as it spends upgrading and maintaining the rest of entire rail network. Is this a good use of public funds? @C4Dispatches tonight, 8pm pic.twitter.com/WMapaPnx6K

Really needs spending in the northern regions linking those powerhouse towns together properly, Newcastle Leeds Manchester need fast reliable links together 👍 what we don’t need is 15 mins off the London to Manchester journey time at this cost!!

Love to know how many backhanders or Tory donors stand to make off this. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. As the programme states, investment is sorely needed on rail in the north it’s just a shocking almost 3rd world situation. Disgrace

Madness and not needed, we are a small size country, high spped rail is such a waste of money when this could have been spent on electrification and new rolling stock

All that's required to achieve the same end is the update of the Milton Keynes junction, an upgrade of the Chiltern Line to Birmingham and the electrification of the Midland Line and the introduction of faster trains on the Kings Cross Edinburgh line. Cost peanuts

This rail line must be the biggest con in history billions of pounds in money wasted and no one to answer for it.

Isn’t #HS2 pretty much entirely down to inappropriately named Lord Adonis @andrew_adonis ? Who I hear loves trains (he has me blocked 😂)

To put this in perspective the government is spending 3 billion on a sewer across London that will not generate a penny economically.
