So the moral of this story is we all want more time to ourselves and to have a decent standard of living as long as someone else is paying for it

Bit like the UK really. Benefits Britain.

We know those people are out there.

Paying people not to work doesn't encourage them to work, who could have guessed that?

I’m more than willing to be the first person to trial this scheme in Britain, I’m even willing to take a small wage reduction

Hmm. That wasn't the impression I had from watching the programme. One had set up a small business, one had been able to fund his time writing a book and another had got into work in a lower paid job and now had the experience to ask for a payrise or move elsewhere for more pay.

You can't evaluate a 2000 person trial on the basis of a handful of anecdotes.
-
Nor can you accusations ppl of being lazy as Hartley-Brewer does.
-
Some of the replies on here would tend to bear out that a lot of people are in fact lazy good for nothigs.
-
I'm one of them. I'm semi retired and would happily take the government's UBI and stop working completely. That's one of the reasons I don't think it will work. The trial only covered the unemployed whereas a true UBI would also cover people like me.
-
Why, you should be grateful that you have a job.
-
Why would I want to work if I have the option not to? I've got much better things to do with my life than work.

I could have told them that giving people money for nothing would have have made them happier, and saved the bother of a trial.

The entire control group was unemployed and getting paid on the condition they remain unemployed, and in a way that costs a lot of tax revenue to bureaucratically administer. The group given basic income received that money without bureaucracy, and it had better outcomes.

If you pay people to do nothing it’s hardly surprising that they continue to do nothing

#FFS. Paying someone not work means they don't look for a job. Yup! Needed a 2 year trial and no doubt a whole new Govt department and some University Grants to work that one out.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Fancy that!

I’d be “happier and less stressed” if someone paid me to sit on my arse. I mean really. Still it was nice of the Fins to take one for the team and prove this doesn’t work.

You'd soon get bored, ask any pensioner.
