It’s not humiliating, Hugo. English is the only truly international language. It’s called “soft power”.https://twitter.com/hugorifkind/status/1093209208995151872 …

The most humiliating thing about Britain being righteously trolled by senior EU diplomats is the way they so effortlessly do it in perfect English.

No, Julia. The humiliating thing is that it's impossible to imagine our politicians doing it back. Even in French.

They're EU politicians. The three most widely spoken first languages in the EU are German, French and English, in that order. Few of our politicians speak more than one of them. Few Continental politicians speak fewer than two.

Because they have to. Most of the music, films and TV they grow up with is in English. It’s the language of global business and one of the only two official languages of the EU.

There are 24 official EU languages. And three procedural languages (English, French, German). But, you know, facts.

The EU has 3 ‘working languages’ - English, French and German. I asked how many of our UK MEPs speak anything other than English? Julia stated the EU only have 2 official languages which is incorrect.

That's actually not the case. Many countries have voice overs for movies, so that's not a source of learning English for them.

There are more than two ‘official’ EU languages. English is used a lot in Brussels and elsewhere across Europe but that soft power will be reduced by Brexit.
