It’s not humiliating, Hugo. English is the only truly international language. It’s called “soft power”.https://twitter.com/hugorifkind/status/1093209208995151872 …

Julia, serious question - What would have to happen for you to admit
#Brexit was a mistake? -
Democracy is never a mistake.
-
Godwins Law of course, and not comparable to Brexit (just a point re this notion of democracy never being wrong) but in 1933, the Nazis won power with the largest share of the vote. I say not comparable, interestingly it was 17,277,180 people.
-
Actually, no single party held a majority through ‘32-33. Hitler was appointed chancellor with the support of industry. Power was cemented through emergency powers later used to abolish opposition parties. Only SD resisted in Reichstag.
-
They still were the largest party, even in 1932, with 11 million. The "democracy is never a mistake" idea - and btw, I think it's very rarely a mistake - still applies, they had massive popular support.
-
Yes, Hitler rose to power in a democratic system but within a year he used violence to dismantle that democracy and became a dictator. Had democracy persisted in Germany, he would have been stopped, no?
-
You mean they’d have had another vote and changed their decision ?
-
No. She means resistance in the Reichstag to the grabbing of emergency powers that were used to abolish all opposition.

Daniel Hannan speaks French and Spanish, I think.
-
he can lie in 3 languages? impressive
-
Sad indictment that there are so few of we can name them individually.
-
Maybe. We are comparing apples and oranges a bit, though. Eurocrats tend to speak English because it's the most widely spoken language across countries, e.g. if a Portuguese diplomat wants to talk to an Estonian, it'll probably be in English.
-
As such, the ones we see on TV representing the EU are often fluent becaus ethey have to be. There simply isn't the same pressure on Brexiteer politicians to have learned European languages to such a level. (The same goes for most of the UK population)
-
Practically yes but still a sad indicetment. Sounds a bit imperial. You speak our language rather than us out the work in.
-
Maintaining fluency in another language is hard. No-one has forced people to speak English - it has emerged as the Lingua Franca, largely due to the US. But now that it has that status, it's quite difficult to get the necessary practice without living abroad.
