My mum was burgled two weeks ago. It's not just about irriplaceale items, it's also about her no longer feeling safe in her own home. Stop dismissing burglary as if there are no long term consequences for the VICTIMS... there are!

Just wanted to say, I did understand that JHB was being sarcastic with her comments....ie. 'rolls eyes', and is probably as exasperated as the rest of us with out of touch ideas by politicians.

-
Iirc the grey PM John Major floated the idea of crime victims being punished if they didn't carefully keep their possessions locked up & way from crooks temptation.

@Telegraph@TelePolitics speaking as a former criminal lawyer I would suspect their reasoning may be balancing the evidence 1/2 -
that short sentences do not have enough preventative effect against the Govt's need to save money and pay for Brexit2/2
-
Longer sentences may prove more cost effective in the longer run.
-
isn't that your point on Brexit too? Problem is that is up for dispute and there isn't a magic money tree. 1/2

However we could revoke article 50 though and chuck some money at this.2/2

Jesus! How dull you are!

During my 34 years as a Met Cop most burglary victims I sadly dealt with described it like "being raped" - having non-consensual intruders rummaging through their intimate belongings/spaces. Most moved house soon afterwards.

I can agree, when I was broken into, someone broke in to MY HOUSE, my home, where my family relax and are happy, where we’ve made memories, stole my things but worst of all, made my family feel unsafe in their own home. Hope the little ball bags get everything they have coming

Serious Q? If "Community Sentences" meant doing 35 hours a week cleaning streets, picking litter, cleaning off graffiti etc, Perhaps with 1/3rd of that spent in a classroom learning some better life skills to keep you straight - why not?

Hanging is so much cheaper and has a lower rate of recidivism.
