Wish he did. The Irish backstop is a red herring. If there isn’t one, who is going to build the so called, ‘hard border’? Both the UK and Ireland have said they aren’t going to. If not them, then who?

Oh come off it, Julia. Trimble is in the DUP who want a no deal Brexit because they have calculated it would diminish the chances of Ireland being unified. It's all about self interest politics and nothing to do with the practicalities of accommodating the GFA.

Yes, I could have worded it better. Thanks. But, may I add, the reason why the DUP & Trimble have gone berserk over the backstop, is because the balance of political influences in NI would shift towards Dublin and away from Westminster. That's why I don't take notice of Trimble

Trimble's reasons are as good as any. The DUP have only one red line. That NI is not treated differently, particularly in a way which affects the union. The Withdrawal agreement did both which makes renegotiation or 'no deal' the only alternatives. They are 'unionist' after all.

"They are "Unionists" after all", is exactly the point. Trimble & the DUP will do anything to thwart any chance of the formation of a United Ireland. The problem is Brexit requires the UK to leave the customs union and single market. GFA requires UK to remain in both.

As has been thoroughly explained in various media, the idea that the GFA has anything within it which offers any opinion on this matter is completely discredited. The GFA indicates a wish not have a border manned by the military.
