I hate the classism that runs through the Brexit debate. People cheering the loss of jobs in Sunderland is disgusting. Many of you have no idea what it’s like to be skint or to have no hope. Yes, people were warned, but the smug glee is rank. You have no idea how lucky you are.

Julia will probably be losing her job & I for one will be full if glee at that.

Will I? When? Can I plan a holiday?

I have to commend your 100% commitment to utter shithousery. It's almost an art form

https://twitter.com/Bug_a_bago/status/1092135392877445126?s=19 … She's not on yours, or anyone else's side. And unless she (or you, or me for that matter) is secretly an industry leader in car manufacturing she has no idea how any of this will affect jobs. She's great at winding people up though. Aka shithousing
-
I might be missing something here, but the statement Nissan put out did state that it would not affect any existing jobs.
-
I think it's naive to think nothing will change. May be more jobs could be created? As it currently stands, it seems unlikely that Nissan will produce care in the UK long term. Her statement was just an excuse to troll people, that's what I was referring to

Stop trying to spin this announcement as positive Julia.

The fact is that Nissan are reducing Investment in Sunderland because of Britain leaving the EU. That's the 'fact!'
-
Nissan are building the X-Trail in Japan because Europe has all but given up on diesels and (when Nissan want to) they can export as many as they want to the EU under Japan’s shiny new FTA whilst keeping Japanese jobs in Japan.
-
No, Nissan today said they are being made in Japan because of potential supply chain issue in post Brexit Britain! BBC News - Nissan chooses Japan over UK to build new X-Trail carhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47107561 …
-
Because it's easier to get to Japan than Sunderland? The article that you posted doesn't have any quotes about Nissan and supply chain. You've fallen for the usual media ploy of crossing two stories in the hope that people put two and two together and come up with six.
-
No because many parts are imported from the EU. I would suggest you read the letter to employees. This is not a media ploy this is fact!
-
And yet, the parts for the Leaf, Qashqai and Juke can get to the UK without issue. This is nothing more than Nissan realising that it's economically better to build X-Trail in Japan now that no-one in Europe is buying them.
-
Not economically better, economically safer! This is about ROI and how safe it is to invest further. Brexit Britain is an inherently riskier proposition than one in the EU. Whichever way you try and position it this is bad news for Sunderland and its cause is Brexit!

Slightly pointless comment, surely given your world view you appreciate the importance of investment? It's a message that they believe in production longer term. What message does this decision send? Be honest, don't just double down.
-
Totally agree Ceri. Which is why it's comforting to know the UK was 2nd in the 'foreign investment' world ranking 2018. Even after all this mess the smart money is being invested right here in the UK.
-
Great I obviously hope that continues. I hope though that the investment is dispersed widely and isn't concentrated in the south East. Decisions like this have a larger impact proportionately in places like Sunderland. Once gone v hard to replace jobs like for like.
