I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

First there’s this... the only reason we don’t have enough British doctors to staff the NHS is because the Govt has for many years deliberately trained too few medical students. Why are we stopping young Brits from following their chosen careers?pic.twitter.com/MAVT31fzeP

Then there’s this. Of course most doctors do a brilliant job - regardless of where they are born or trained. But the GMC does not accept all qualifications from every country for a reason. And they can still get it wrong, as these official figures from 2016 suggest.pic.twitter.com/5TgMIzB7I7

And then there’s this. It is not xenophobia or racism to want to be abl to easily communicate with your doctor. This is a major concern for NHS patients with foreign doctors. This article is from 2016, *after* the tougher language tests were imposed.pic.twitter.com/8GNh5QZVKK

And, finally, the issue of language barriers between patient and doctor has been raised by MPs on the Commons health select committee. Or are they all racists and xenophobes too? This article is from 2012.pic.twitter.com/NfXriTqZQr

It should be possible to have a sensible debate in this country about issues like immigration, training and language without one side incessantly shouting “xenophobia” or “racist” at the other side. Sadly, that’s all some people have as their argument. That’s all. Enjoy your day.

Your primary arguments however were that the EU is stopping us training doctors. Which you've shown isn't true. You then alluded to the fact that foreign doctors are of lesser quality (depending on region) despite the fact they must prove they meet minimum standards here

No, I never said the EU is stopping us training. The supply of EU labour has meant we don’t train enough Brits to do skilled work.

And I didn’t say foreign doctors were of lesser quality. I said I’d prefer to be treated by a doctor trained in Britain. Actually all EU doctors are allowed to work in the UK. Not all countries in the EU have the same standards as we do.

I can’t speak for the doctors but my partner is a heart nurse and says the EU nurses are not trained to the high standard UK nurses are.

Controlled immigration will reduce demand on UK services, inc NHS. Controlled immigration will also attract the appropriately trained overseas medical talent. £13bn saved on EU membership annually can be better invested into NHS services and training, ensuring increased supply.

Oh for goodness sake. There *is no* £13bn saved annually. As of Q1 2018, UK gdp was 2% lower than trend & still falling relative to peers & where we’d have been. That’s worth £40bn per year. If you want £13bn pa, you can have 2x that by staying in and paying the membership feepic.twitter.com/zqVt8IGwEp

No thanks. I'd much prefer to exit from a 70's trading bloc, and gear the UK to greater trade growth outside of the Eu. Implementing our own independent trade policy. Let's stop crying remain, gets some certainty back, and allow investment into UK economy once more = Gdp growth.

I mean, you’re welcome to hold any political views you want, but don’t deny facts that make their assumptions untenable. You can say “I know it’s hugely damaging and we’ll all be much poorer but I still want to keep more foreigners out” for example.

What's damaging is a 3 yr campaign to overturn brexit at any cost. Its damaging UK democracy, society, negotiations, creates uncertainty in mkts, holds back investment & Gdp growth. Legitimised & given license by a remain majority in hoc, the cabinet & mainstream media. Criminal

No the data shows the slowdown starting from the date of Brexit. Leavers held 3 key portfolios. Deflection (and perverse) to blame it on opposition to X rather than X Man: let’s move to the moon. Wife: is that wise? Later, it’s not going well Man: wife’s undermining is to blame.

Julia, it's in the video you are clearly saying that a doctors origin might impact their quality. Yes they are because we signed up to an agreement that means our doctors and their doctors will share a mutual recognition of qualifications. People who are happy to be treated by foreign doctors should ask themselves why the other countries should invest time and money training their own staff and then have shortages of medical staff, here are not enough doctors in poor EU states even if they train people.

Recently I was misunderstood by two different hospital consultants whose primary language wasn’t English. Both me and my O/H tried to make ourselves understood to no avail. Could have had serious consequences.
