I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

I totally agree. Given the chronic shortage of doctors why is this not viable or actionable course? BTW other advanced countries are competing for those doctors so shortage is set to get even worse.

You are not listening! The NHS cannot afford to fully train all its own British staff! Plus: not enough UK students can afford the cost of the initial medical university study.
-
That’s the point. We can’t afford not to train our own staff, but it’s not the work of an afternoon. This will take years to have a noticeable effect. But we must start now.
-
No! The point is that the NHS is so critically underfunded and medical student fees are so high that the NHS could not train up fully many more UK doctor and nurses than it already does. There is no magic money tree remember.
-
True, but the haemmorage of money paid to locum staff cannot continue. It must be a case of spend to save eventually. I live (fingers crossed) in hope.

Perhaps we could encourage a few more students to take medical degrees by making all the multitude of “complete waste of time” degrees off the table.

No one seems to care about the morality, or lack of, in recruiting east European health professionals to the extent that there are shortages in their own countries.https://www.dw.com/en/medical-exodus-leaves-romania-bulgaria-in-pain/a-44487178 …

We’ve always taken a boom and bust approach to workforce planning. Partly as a result of a lack of long term planning in the NHS (political cycles)
-
So perhaps it's time we started taking a loner term approach then?
-
Yes and some efforts afoot to do just that. While it’s the biggest public service under the government of the day its very hard
-
Urgh. *longer term

there was a shortage back around 1998, when I taught English for medical staff for Spanish nurses, in Blackpool and Barrow.......during a time of severe unemployment in Spain.

I love Julia’s ambition. She’s been trying so hard over the last year or so to position herself as the most loathed, reactionary, misinformed & thin-skinned “journalist” (cough) and she’s already overtaken Rod Liddle, Katie Hopkins & Isabel Oakeshott. Well done Julia!
