I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

They want to work here as they earn more here. Nothing wrong with that but if they can't speak English or understand it then a fatal accident will occur

Obviously you know nothing of the PLAB test every foreign Dr has to undergo. It’s so very frustrating when people who post a comment haven’t bothered to research facts first.

Actually, until very recently, doctors from the EU didn’t have to pass stringent language tests to work here.

Depends on your definition of stringent, I suppose. The TRAB/PLAB test has been in effect since 1975. As far as I can make out, even EU doctors have to take part of the test to evaluate their language skills and other suitability factors for working in the UK.

This is not a place where facts .are welcomed or even recognised.. And of course ypo are absolutely correct. EU doctors must pass the English proficiency test - it is a l requirement by the General Medical Council.

Like it or not, most of us have had a negative experience with a medical professional who struggles to communicate in English.

Actually, it’s often the case that foreign trained Drs speak better English that some of our own indigenous population. I’m English and I sometimes don’t understand what people are saying, especially the poorly educated yoof.

Not just doctors, I recently had a call from the District Nurse with regard to my wife I had to ask her 5 times what she was saying. Turned out all she wanted was her date of birth. Her accent was so strong it was almost impossible to understand anything else

Exactly my wife broke her wrist and the doctor had to have a translator with him as he couldn't speak English properly. Surely it's cheaper to just have a trained doctor that can multitask. My wife had to have her wrist set again as he didn't understand. It's just common sense
