I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

Your primary arguments however were that the EU is stopping us training doctors. Which you've shown isn't true. You then alluded to the fact that foreign doctors are of lesser quality (depending on region) despite the fact they must prove they meet minimum standards here
-
No, I never said the EU is stopping us training. The supply of EU labour has meant we don’t train enough Brits to do skilled work.
-
And I didn’t say foreign doctors were of lesser quality. I said I’d prefer to be treated by a doctor trained in Britain. Actually all EU doctors are allowed to work in the UK. Not all countries in the EU have the same standards as we do.
-
I can’t speak for the doctors but my partner is a heart nurse and says the EU nurses are not trained to the high standard UK nurses are.
-
Any specific countries or are we saying that our nurses are the highest possible standard by a noticeable margin?

You are right
@JuliaHB1 The racist/ Xenophobe cry is the standard trope doled out by those that cannot accept their is legitimacy to concerns about immigrationand its constant use against those who debate it has effectively destroyed its meaning and impact. - 1 more reply

Have you tried not being xenophobic and racist, and _then_ having the argument?
-
Yes, I’ve been doing that since I was a baby and learned to talk. You?

1/3 Oh my, this is so painful to read. I follow you, because, whilst I don’t agree with you views, I respect your mostly thought out opinion which helps balance mine, but your comments in the video and now this thread show a concerning narrow-mindedness & is verging on fake news.
-
2/3 your article of 72% of doctors being struck off creates a narrative that all foreign doctors are bad. And yet 26% of the 140,000 amazing doctors in the UK are from overseas, and your the 72% who were struck off (66 a year) equates to 0.18% of the total overseas doctors.
-
3/3 it’s easy to create hyperbole when you only feed only the facts you like. It’s time you recognise the majority of these doctors are decent, hardworking people who break their backs for the good of others. You owe a large number of doctors in the UK an apology.

Unfortunately I was seen by two senior hospital DR's whose command and enunciation of the English language was poor. I was lucky that regardless of the fact that they both found nothing wrong with me I was referred to a senior British Dr and got a diagnosis and treatment.
-
So was my daughter, we needed a dictionary to talk to Polish doctor (who thought it was a good idea to invite him to work for NHS?) But if you ask for a doctor you can communicate with you are a racist now.
-
I hope your daughter was ok! Yes..we need to be able to have honest and open dialogue to air our concerns, particularly when lives could be at risk.
-
Thank you. She is fine, but just imagine when we all are stressed and can't explain/understand, no communication (we didn't blame the doctor, wasn't his fault somebody appointed him). And you are right, we have to be able to discuss issues, not to be afraid of name-calling.

My son was born 8 weeks prematurely. Without foreign born docs & nurses in the SCBU he would have died. So I don’t accept the premise of your argument
-
If I did accept your argument then the solution is more resources for the NHS & medical training. So an end to austerity. By implication you support Labour on this.
