I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

It should be possible to have a sensible debate in this country about issues like immigration, training and language without one side incessantly shouting “xenophobia” or “racist” at the other side. Sadly, that’s all some people have as their argument. That’s all. Enjoy your day.

Worldwide air traffic control speak English and as a pilot English has to be of a good standard. Nobody shouts racism or xenophobia. Why should doctors not be expected to have a good language level for whatever Country they practice in.

If you literally cant understand what your doctor or health worker is saying (has happened to me) should you sit in silence and pain for fear of being labelled xenophobic? More scholarships for UK students who wish to make a positive long term contribution to the NHS.

Any doctor in the UK has to speak very good English. How can anyone object to this? Simple really!

The issue of the language barrier is often ignored by "open borders" advocates. English is quite a difficult language to master. And complete mastery is essential for medical staff at the front line most especially in these roles.

But you are talking rubbish again. The GMC has for many years insisted on an English proficiency test for EU doctors. It is a legal requirement.

And what gives us the right to wave obscenely large wads of cash, certainly compared to what they can get in their own emerging countries, to come here and help us, at the expense of their own people, simply because we don’t train our own cohort due to ruinous political ideology?
