I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

And, finally, the issue of language barriers between patient and doctor has been raised by MPs on the Commons health select committee. Or are they all racists and xenophobes too? This article is from 2012.pic.twitter.com/NfXriTqZQr

It should be possible to have a sensible debate in this country about issues like immigration, training and language without one side incessantly shouting “xenophobia” or “racist” at the other side. Sadly, that’s all some people have as their argument. That’s all. Enjoy your day.

It’s racist pure and simple. In order to work in the nhs everyone has to be able to communicate in English to a certain level.
@talkRADIO please say you’re firing this racist or are you condoning itThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It is a worry. My dad was taken in last year unconcious to have a brain scan yet a nurse who could barely speak English kept insisting to me "he go home". I pointed to my dad unconcious hooked up to wires and machines and she nodded and said "yes he go home". Unbelievable

Those were the reasons I wrote to SoS and Department Health posing similar questions on qualifications, training, knowledge, skills and language ability. It is common sense anyone providing medical services should have relevant experience/language ability treating patients

Oh how spiffingly decent of you to argue against spending caps for training doctors, which other Govt spending caps shall we eliminate ?

@MigrationWatch just checked my letters Dept Health of 30 Aug 2013; response, "...NHS employers have a clear responsibility to undertake checks to ensure that any person they appoint has ADEQUATE skills for the specific post. Clear guidance has been issued to NHS bodies"Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

And always different doctors so every time you have to start the story all over again. I miss the time when I had the family doctor. The visit was 5 minuts because he knew you from birth. Can you imagine how many more patients could be treated in the same time?

Hold on I thought the NHS was clogged up with foreigners who can’t speak English? Now there’s not enough of them? Make your mind up.

As someone who is blind, I once walked out of a medical due to not being able to understand the nurse. I tried and tried to work with her. She wasn't even an EU nurse.

It’s amazing the same people who criticize school cuts in this country go on to favour graduates from schools outside the same jurisdiction.

Keep going, snowflakes don't like the truth, it gets in the way of their utopia. Truth is truth. Doctors from different countries add masses to the NHS, but they have to be qualified to the same levels. Some countries are wide of the mark.

I believe that I am a consequential victim if this problem following an appointment more than ten years ago, health issues impacting daily on full capacity to generate income and pay appropriate taxes now since 2006.

I've been complaining for ages about the BBC World Service Radio for their use of presenters whose English is excruciatingly painful. Hardly a model for the benefit of foreign listeners.
