I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

And then there’s this. It is not xenophobia or racism to want to be abl to easily communicate with your doctor. This is a major concern for NHS patients with foreign doctors. This article is from 2016, *after* the tougher language tests were imposed.pic.twitter.com/8GNh5QZVKK

And, finally, the issue of language barriers between patient and doctor has been raised by MPs on the Commons health select committee. Or are they all racists and xenophobes too? This article is from 2012.pic.twitter.com/NfXriTqZQr

It should be possible to have a sensible debate in this country about issues like immigration, training and language without one side incessantly shouting “xenophobia” or “racist” at the other side. Sadly, that’s all some people have as their argument. That’s all. Enjoy your day.

@juliahb1 that means that 130 British doctors got struck off? I think that’s top of the league. Well done. What an argument -
Oh dear. Maths isn’t your strong point, is it? 130 British doctors from a MUCH larger number of doctors.
-
Still raises the point that 1 in 4 struck of doctors is British. Compared to 6 other nations

It is not a morally superior position to argue that we should drain the highly trained talent of poor countries (leaving them bereft) because we can’t be arsed to train our own professionals.

What's important here is that 20% of Doctors (not from the UK) are responsible for 72% of those "struck off"..

Are you aware that the interview techniques for medical school have altered so that only touchy feely students get in? If you don't have a humanitarian mindset that you can prove in interview, took can get 3 A*'s, you're not going to get in ty o medical school.

When one has personal experience of dealing with obviously incapable medical staff in crisis situations, it leaves one dumbfounded as to the relevant authority's standards and practices!

When I came to the UK from Romania to work as a doctor in 2002 I passed a language test as well as the PASTEST organised by the GMC. After 2007 a lot of doctors from Romania just got a job and came over. They had some command of English but knew nothing about the system.

No, you were discussing EU27 doctors and the EU regulations enable mutual recognition of medical qualifications.

So when the need to force all English doctors to get and maintain certificates of non-bigotry, ensuring they are not Brexiteers and hence can be trusted to treat minorities...

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7415075/Surgeon-who-removed-90pc-of-babys-bladder-escapes-being-struck-off.html … Some of the cases in which the 'professional' keeps their job, are equally horrifying!
