I’ve been inundated with tweets calling me xenophobic and racist as a result of this @ofocBrexit tweet. But here’s why I think we should train our own young people to be doctors rather than import foreign doctors... thread.https://twitter.com/OFOCBrexit/status/1086947236192219136 …

First there’s this... the only reason we don’t have enough British doctors to staff the NHS is because the Govt has for many years deliberately trained too few medical students. Why are we stopping young Brits from following their chosen careers?pic.twitter.com/MAVT31fzeP

Then there’s this. Of course most doctors do a brilliant job - regardless of where they are born or trained. But the GMC does not accept all qualifications from every country for a reason. And they can still get it wrong, as these official figures from 2016 suggest.pic.twitter.com/5TgMIzB7I7

And then there’s this. It is not xenophobia or racism to want to be abl to easily communicate with your doctor. This is a major concern for NHS patients with foreign doctors. This article is from 2016, *after* the tougher language tests were imposed.pic.twitter.com/8GNh5QZVKK

And, finally, the issue of language barriers between patient and doctor has been raised by MPs on the Commons health select committee. Or are they all racists and xenophobes too? This article is from 2012.pic.twitter.com/NfXriTqZQr

It should be possible to have a sensible debate in this country about issues like immigration, training and language without one side incessantly shouting “xenophobia” or “racist” at the other side. Sadly, that’s all some people have as their argument. That’s all. Enjoy your day.

I have never understood why the UK has not fully funded doctors and nurses through education and then contracting them to work for the NHS for a set period or pay fees back. It would help the brain drain as well

There is a belief, unfounded the British youngsters can't step up. This is bullshit! The government prefer subservient, eager to work overseas labour. Why? Because they can pay them less and treat them like dirt. They don't kick off because they have a salary higher than at home

We do train our own doctors, they leave. 12.7% of UK trained doctors took work/ training abroad in 2016, 13.1% took a break from medicine. That was unrelated to the EU, unrelated to Brexit but largely because of the terrible management of junior doctor contracts by Jeremy Hunt.

The governments sets the places according to the advice from the GMC. So you need to ask them why they set the limits so low.

The *only* reason?! Nothing to do with problems retaining British doctors because of increasing workloads, low pay, burn-out and exhaustion? Training more British doctors won’t do much good if we can’t keep them in the job.

No-one is disputing need to train more Dr's in UK. And retain them. But if you add 5000 more med school places this year, will take 10 years before they become GPs. Meanwhile need Dr's now.

Sure. But we cannot go on indefinitely denying generations of UK school leavers the opportunity to do medicine, that they apply in 1000s to do but 9/10 are turned away, and blighting their chances by taking someone else from abroad to do a job they should and could have done.

We should create more opportunities for British students to study medicine. That requires investment in medical schools to create training capacity. But it won't solve shortage of Dr's overnight. No foreign Dr is denying a British Dr a job - there are vacancies.

Exactly so. But ever since I trained as a doctor there have never been enough training places. This denies children who go to school in the UK who work extremely hard, do extra exams and experience the opportunity of filling these roles in society. Whilst we poach from abroad.

Ask the BMA. And then there's the usual management response about why should we train people only for them to bugger off and earn more money overseas. We should train more doctors and nurses here and make them pay back loans if they leave the country.
