BREAKING: MPs vote 303 to 296 in favour of Yvette Cooper's amendment to the Finance Bill. Another blow for the PM and shows strength of feelling in the Commons against no-deal Brexit.

It's been happening for many years. MPs voted to remove death penalty when country was still for it because felt right thing to do. This is same. We elect MPs to vote on our behalf but free to vote as per their conscience. It's how our democracy works!

That wasn’t after they voted to give voters a final say on the issue in a referendum which they then ignored. Quite different.

They have hardly ignored it, they have spoken about little else for the last 2 and a half years. You have to admit she gave it her best shot.

I may not like it, You may not like it but I think separately the principle stands that MPs can always vote according to conscience in our democracy.

Wouldn't a 2nd referendum actually be giving voters the final say?

The referendum wasn't binding. It's an opinion, just like any other election. Just because the people voted yes to building a rocket to bring a part of the sun back to earth doesn't mean Parliament has to implement that.

Ignored? It has taken every last particle of political energy for nearly 3 years. It has been all the government has done. A withdrawal agreement has been agreed. How on earth can you claim it was ignored?

The only thing being ignored is the biggest election finance fraud in UK history, by people like you. Then in the next breath you shout 'will of the people'. It's embarrassing to hear this from a grown woman.

Look, the grown ups can see that despite lots of people saying (not voting, stop saying that) that they wanted one thing, when the grown ups saw that it was a BAD thing they suggested we all re-think it based on proper, comprehensive, informed evidence. It's what grown ups do. 🙄

Actually they didn’t they agreed to an advisory referendum then decided it was binding on parliament after the event.
