Put these 1,555,045 people in cars and the jam would stretch to the moon.
What a great advert for segregated cycle lanes in central London.

Continuous 8mph traffic (avg London speed) all year round would be approx 15 million. Given it uses about 1/4 the space and traffic isn't continuous even in London that's not bad.
Oh look - the DFT publishes average daily flows and includes the embankment! Latest count averages 11,165 motor vehicles per day, so just under 8 per minute but in three lanes instead of one.
10,000+ cycle trips a day on the Embankment. Each motor lane can cope with 200 motors an hour. you'd need 50 hours in each day to get the same throughput on the same space - and there's plenty of room to increase the cycle throughput, while more motors = more jams.
No there’s not.Only 682 by 18:12.Hardly 10k plus per day.pic.twitter.com/A5qT74MiXe
So? If those 3 cyclists a minute were all in single occupancy cars instead, it would significantly add to congestion and pollution. Is that what you'd prefer?
They do significantly add to congestion and pollution. 3 people a minute is terrible utilisation of any lane in central London, particularly one dedicated to personal transport. The problem is permanent lanes only used for a few hours a day.
As an average over 24 hours a day, I'd say 3 a minute is very good. Especially for active, non polluting transport with benefits for all.
Don’t y’all bees a upsettins Mr Whine Missy Farty Brewer none He bees un Bi-Cyclins disciple & thas fur goddam sure! Mind hes also bees un overpaid tax cheatins lankys streak of Bison piss...thas fur goddam sure swell! Y’all have a mightily fine day Ma’am! Yeeee Haaaa!
.. and divide by 5 coz it’s the same people every day..
Divide by 10 because if they are commuting they pass the check position by twice
That’s 1.5m fewer car journeys
So none would ever use public transport or walk then?
If you think people powered transport is a bad thing, you probably don’t live in the smog.
Irrelevant to what I said, do you believe everyone of those cyclists would have driven a car?
Pedantic. No they wouldn’t all be car journeys, but likely some other kind of carbon emitting form of travel.
Not pedantic, you make sweeping statements then get annoyed when challenged
Not annoyed, I just despair when people challenge undoubtedly good change in our way of life. Carbon emissions are bad for us personally and collectively. End of story.
I agree 100%. Unfortunately days of working within a walking or cycling distance of home are gone. The use of carbon transport won’t end in my lifetime, but if you can’t get China, USA and India on board it won’t change significantly
Approximating the maths...
Moon 250,000 miles away.
1,500,000 cars.
So 6 cars for every mile.
Hardly a JAM @theJeremyVine !!!
If u take away the fact that most people r in bed 8 hrs a day. Don’t cycle on Xmas day, new years day, days when weather is atrocious etc, it’s probs more like 10 per min. 1 every 6 secs. Is that not enough? Oh and 0 deaths...nb. the thing probs doesn’t even work properly nyway!
