So @DominicRaab and Brexiteers think a defeat for @theresa_may on Dec 11 will allow the UK to renegotiate the Irish backstop, specifically the right to leave unilaterally. Here's why, after chats with both sides, that ain't happening IMO. 1/threadhttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/12/05/dominic-raabs-dreams-renegotiating-irish-backstop-will-remain/ …

First Raab thinks a PM that shows some "will and resolve" can get the EU to change its mind. But his own experience must tell him different. Remember his own failed tilt at @simoncoveney demanding three-month exit clause? Fail. /2https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/11/04/dominic-raab-has-privately-demanded-right-pull-britain-eu-backstop/ …

But even allowing for disingenuousness, there are 3 reasons why the EU is not bluffing when it says it won't renegotiate the backstop to give the UK a unilateral walkout clause. 1. They actually want to avoid a hard border 2. Political solidarity 3. They don't buy UK bluff /3

      1. There isn’t going to be a hard border. Full stop. Everyone knows that. 2. Yes, agreed. But our failed negotiation stance allowed them to stay united. 3. But May hasn’t been bluffing. She has clearly told the EU she’ll take a bad deal so that’s what they’ve given us

If non EU Britain will have a sea border with EU France after brexit that seems to be ok with the EU so why the big problem with Ireland other than its a good excuse for May and the EU to keep us tied to the EU.

The DUP/UVF/UDA won't agree to the border in the Irish sea.

So true. The people voted to leave the EU. Forget about the political posturing if May/Parl had accepted leaving the EU & started to focus/show signs of wanting to be truly Independent outside of the EU then the EU wouldn't have dared produce the WA as is.
