Given that the work these children’s hospices do is - as you say - so “crucial”, why isn’t it funded all year round by taxpayers through the NHS instead of relying on how many people happen to buy a pop song at Christmas? @PhilipHammondUK?https://twitter.com/PhilipHammondUK/status/1068959464869511169 …

NEW: For the eighth consecutive year the government is donating the VAT on all sales of this year’s #XFactor single to children’s hospices, @Tog4ShortLives and @SSChospices. Every single you buy will help fund their crucial work.

If only we didn't have to fund India's space programme and give lots of dictators money for new Mercedes. I'm sure Jean-Claude Juncker could restock his wine cellar for less than £39bn too.

Here’s another example along the lines of “I cannot believe we rely on volunteers for this”. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-38330814 … Envy of the world...

If the UK cannot afford essential services - why do we waste money on vanity projects globally or even in the UK like HS2?

Doesn’t that apply to lots of charities? The fact that there even exists a “Help for heroes” charity is a disgrace. It should be government funded, starting with the perverse foreign aid budget.

Like the RNLI, the hospice movement is one of the last reminders of how voluntary activity can meet crucial social needs without having to resort to bureaucratic, coercive, top-down state provision. Long may it remain independent - charity is a positive virtue, Julia.
