Brexit has never been deliverable in the terms that were promised by the Leave campaign - and this has been true since 2016.

I voted leave ...............

Take the handcuffs off, and trade with the whole world,

-
Interesting argument ..... Can I ask what's wrong with the current set of trade deals that we already have with nearly 200 countries ?pic.twitter.com/NBCCC3SCpK

Tariff
-
Give me an example.... All the tariffs I've looked at make sense. There are improvements we could make ... But what we have is probably better than May's deal
-
The deal I voted for is a full exit, Small business carnt trade easily with the world because of EU red tape, Big business can absorb the cost .

-
Can you give me an example of EU red tape? One of these perhaps? https://infacts.org/these-5-eu-trade-myths-are-brexiter-nonsense/ …pic.twitter.com/zvNWe89EcF

Or perhaps one of these 658 EU myths listed in alphabetical order ... https://blogs.ec.europa.eu/ECintheUK/euromyths-a-z-index/ …pic.twitter.com/hYDcSz9Xqw

Why can’t the UK just be a normal independent country like Japan, Australia, America, Canada etc? It’s really not an outrageous demand.
-
We could. But it would come at a huge economic, political & diplomatic cost. Also important to understand none of those countries are truly "independent". All have to adhere to the rules, regulations & standards of others via trade & political deals.
-
Surely they’re technically independent though and are voluntarily signing up to treaties etc. I’ve no problem with that - Brexit isn’t isolationist - it’s expansionist. Or at least it could be. No they countries are bound in the way EU members are.
-
No more than we voluntarily signed up to the single market, CU etc. Sure, those countries could withdraw from their core agreements, just as we could/can. But most don't/wouldn't because of the huge costs involved of doing so.
-
The difficulty for me is the difference between the original conception of the EU which made a lot of sense to what it drifted to without consent or adequate checks and balances. It’s a shame we were only country to not get refendum in Lisbon treaty for example.
-
I share that. But we are where we are & the idea of pulling out unilaterally i.e. no deal, remains madness.
-
The tragedy for me is that Brexit meant “third party country” but there’s been no meaningful prep, so a sudden no deal would not be “smooth”. This current situation is a very peculiar Theresa interpretation of what should be the way forward & I can’t see any advantage in it.
-
Certainly agree that A50 should bot have been triggered when it was. We needed years of prep, not months, But delaying it was never really politically viable. As for May, I struggle to see how we weren't always going to end up here no matter who was in charge.
