By the way, Richard Madeley is one of the nicest, kindest and most professional people I’ve met in the TV world. If even he can fall foul of the PC police, no one is safe.

The problem here is a clickbait article based on trawling Twitter and finding two tweets. There is no mass outrage, of course.

The 'people took to twitter' news angle should always carry a health warning. In pre-twitter era, you wouldn't take 'three random people in a pub said' as a representing public opinion news story, yet that is now the authority ascribed to a few tweets from random individuals.

Autism can reliably be diagnosed from the age of 2. It can be hereditary or caused prior to or during birth. In some the brain compensates so symptoms are missed, or appear later. As someone who is autistic I am definitely not offended by Madeley's question

And aren't we allowed to make mistakes any more? Even if it was a gaff, I can't see that it needs to be jumped on.

FFS, not all of us know about the different afflictions people have. Asking questions like he did is educating yourself not a bad thing. BTW - am I going to get into trouble for saying afflictions? Is that still and ok word?

I took it as his asking how long he’d been diagnosed for - just didn’t come across properly. Oh well, sack him anyway, just to be sure...

I didn't see it, but so would I

Hold up. He's doing the "people in my audience might not know this so I'll ask on their behalf" interviewer trick isn't he? Accusing him of doing no research or that it's a problem he doesn't know, ugh. If people want to be offended they can come see me and I'll sort them out.

And what the outraged seem to have missed is that we aren’t actually sure how or why or even when autism develops. Frankly if he really is “ignorant” as they claim he did the sensible thing - he asked

Maybe RM knew the answer, & was actually trying to educate, TV & News journos often ask obvious questions so viewers have a full picture.
