Hey, dinner ladies, if you want to be paid the same as bin men, there’s a really easy way to achieve that: go and get a job collecting bins. Simples!https://twitter.com/WEP_UK/status/1054621410440683522 …

As a person who’s mother had dementia and had to go into a home I feel that their job is so much more taxing then a bin man, the physical side is hard going, lifting, bathing, feeding, entertaining. Then there’s all the mental side, the upset when a person dies dealing with families
-
Not forgetting the effect on emotional wellbeing.

'Garbage'? Wash out your mouth with soap Julia! It's refuse or rubbish... Actually refuse collectors don't actually lift bins they wheel them. Care workers often have to lift, and move very heavy clients without any machinery or aids, so that argument muddies the waters somewhat
-
I saw my bin men yesterday They were lifting Last week they were doing it in the cold pissing rain Next week theyll be doing it in driving sleet

Mmmm so what's harder... Collecting bins or sitting on your bum chatting for 3 hours a day. Mmmm which pays more? Not sure your arguement works Julia.

very true and you are unlikely to find a contaminated junkies syringe in a pan of soup in the school kitchen

Then literally any job should pay more than whatever they pay you to spout nonsense from 6:30am to 10am, Monday to Friday.

You should try working in a school meals kitchen 3 staff for 220 people sure that’s not physical work is it? Maybe lifting people washing and cleaning them making beds etc that’s not physical work is it. Wheel a bin up to a lift job done
-
Also caring and providing nutrition and care for children requires skills. I would argue they both deserve more pay but accept I only know what I see of what binmen do. Bit like JHB with all of those jobs.
-
They are not allowed to walk anymore than 25mtrs to get a bin. Though to be fair we do need bin men

Think it pays more becajse its also filthy dirty work that few people want to do. Caring is a vocation and EVERY vocation is exploited in terms of pay from pilots to junior doctors to teachers and nurses.

Is it? Have you ever done a bin round, have you cared for old people?

Have you worked in a care home? It can be very physically demanding

By that logic, bin collectors should get paid more than radio presenters, as it is harder physical labour?

Thank you Julia. The way you trade in absolutes always makes me chuckle. First up, being a care worker is serious physical work. You try lifting somebody who’s catatonic. Secondly, being a bin collector is also harder physical labour than being a lawyer or a radio shock jock.
